Getting three quotes sounds like due diligence. But when all three say “6.6 kW system” and the prices vary by $4,000, most homeowners are left guessing which one to trust. The solar industry in Australia is competitive, and it still attracts operators who cut corners on hardware, installation quality, or both. Here’s how to read a quote like someone who actually knows what they’re looking at.

Start with the panels — not the price

A Tier 1 designation from Bloomberg NEF means the manufacturer is financially stable — it does not mean the panel is high quality. What you actually want is the manufacturer’s track record and their Australian warranty presence. Well-regarded panel brands in 2026 include REC, Jinko Solar (Tiger Neo series), LONGi (Hi-MO series), Canadian Solar, Suntech, and Tindo Solar.

Tindo Solar deserves a special mention — they’re the only solar panel manufacturer actually based in Australia, producing their Karra series in Adelaide. For homeowners who want to support Australian manufacturing, Tindo is a genuine option with strong warranties and a team that isn’t going anywhere.

Check the panel efficiency rating — modern quality panels sit at 20–23%. Also check the performance warranty carefully: good panels guarantee at least 80% output at year 25. Budget panels often drop to 70%, which is a significant difference in lifetime generation.

The inverter is the engine room

In 2026, the established inverter brands with genuine Australian technical support are Fronius, SolarEdge, Sungrow, GoodWe, Enphase, and Alpha ESS. Each has local technical staff, spare parts, and support that actually answers the phone when something goes wrong in year seven.

String inverters work excellently on simple, unshaded roofs and are the most cost-effective choice. Microinverters (Enphase) and DC optimisers (SolarEdge) genuinely earn their price premium on shaded or complex roofs — but don’t let a salesperson upsell you on panel-level electronics if your roof is simple and north-facing.

Check the installer’s CEC accreditation

Every solar installer must hold a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accreditation. Any legitimate quote should state the installer’s name and CEC number — you can verify this at the CEC website in under a minute. Be cautious of companies that run a polished sales team but subcontract the physical install to whoever is cheapest that week. Ask directly: who is the accredited electrician who will install this system?

Non-negotiable on any quote: Panel brand and model, inverter brand and model, CEC number of the installer, projected annual generation in kWh, and workmanship warranty period. If any of these are missing, the quote is incomplete. Don’t sign it.

What projected generation should look like in SEQ

A “6.6 kW system” tells you nameplate capacity — not how much it’ll produce on your roof. In Southeast Queensland, a north-facing 6.6 kW system on an unshaded roof should generate roughly 9,500–10,500 kWh per year. East/west split roofs produce 10–15% less. If a quote claims dramatically higher numbers, ask exactly how that was calculated.

Home battery storage in 2026 — what’s actually worth buying?

The home battery market in Australia has grown up. There are now several genuinely excellent options at different price points, and the technology has proven itself over enough years to draw meaningful conclusions about real-world reliability and performance.

Should you even get a battery?

The financial case hinges on one number: the gap between what you’re paid for exported solar (your feed-in tariff) versus what you pay to buy electricity. In Queensland in 2026, most households receive between 5 and 10 cents per kWh for solar exported to the grid, and pay between 28 and 38 cents per kWh to buy it back. That 25–30 cent gap is what a battery exploits.

A typical 10 kWh battery cycling 7–8 kWh per day can save roughly $700–$1,000 per year. At $9,000–$11,000 installed, the maths on payback is 9–13 years — improving as grid prices rise and battery costs fall.

Key question to ask: How many kWh per day is your system currently exporting? That’s the pool a battery draws from. If you’re only exporting 3 kWh on average, buying a 13.5 kWh battery is wasted capacity.

LFP vs NMC — why battery chemistry matters

LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) — used by BYD, Sungrow, Alpha ESS — is thermally stable, doesn’t catch fire easily, has a longer cycle life (4,000+ cycles), and degrades more slowly in Queensland’s heat. It’s become the industry standard for home storage for good reason.

NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) — used in older Powerwall 2 units — offers higher energy density but is more sensitive to heat. For Queensland’s climate, LFP is generally preferable.

The standout feature is the integrated solar inverter and battery in one unit. Usable capacity is 13.5 kWh with a rated continuous output of 11.5 kW and round-trip efficiency of approximately 97% — the best in the residential market. Warranty is 10 years / 70% capacity retention. Installed in SEQ: ~$14,500–$17,000.

BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS

Modular and scalable from 5.1 kWh to 25.6 kWh. LFP chemistry, ~95% round-trip efficiency, 10 year warranty / 60% capacity retention. Needs a compatible hybrid inverter (Fronius, Sungrow, SMA, GoodWe). Installed in SEQ (10.2 kWh): ~$9,500–$12,500.

Sungrow SBH

Integrates natively with Sungrow hybrid inverters. LFP, modular from 9.6 kWh to 25.6 kWh, ~95% efficiency, 10 year warranty. Installed in SEQ (9.6 kWh): ~$8,500–$11,500.

Alpha ESS Smile series

The federal government’s solar incentive is delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) via certificates called STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates). Despite the “rebate” framing in marketing, STCs are tradeable certificates — not a direct government payment.

How the scheme actually works

  1. You install a solar system by a CEC-accredited installer.
  2. STCs are created on your behalf through the federal government’s REC Registry.
  3. The number of STCs depends on your system size, climate zone, and years remaining in the scheme.
  4. STCs are sold — usually by the installer — to electricity retailers legally required to purchase them.
  5. The dollar value is passed to you as an upfront discount on your quoted system price.

How many STCs does a Queensland system get in 2026?

The scheme runs until 31 December 2030. As of January 2026, there are 5 deeming years remaining. Southeast Queensland is in Zone 3 with a multiplier of 1.382.

Electricity prices remain high. Commercial electricity in Queensland typically sits between 28 and 42 cents per kWh. For a business using 200 kWh per day, that’s $20,000–$30,000 per year. Offsetting even 40% of that changes the conversation significantly.

Solar hardware costs have plateaued at historic lows. You’re getting considerably more generating capacity per dollar than five years ago.

Instant asset write-off and accelerated depreciation can significantly improve after-tax payback. Speak to your accountant about what provisions apply to your business structure.

Self-consumption — the key commercial driver

Commercial solar economics are driven primarily by self-consumption, not export. Commercial feed-in tariffs are often as low as 3–6 cents per kWh versus 28–42 cents to buy it back. Size for your daytime consumption profile, not for maximum export.

Common mistake: A restaurant open only for dinner service, or a gym with peak hours after 5pm, has minimal daytime solar self-consumption. Be honest about your operating hours before investing.

Network tariff changes from 1 July 2026 — what they mean for solar owners

From 1 July 2026, electricity prices are changing across Queensland and NSW. The AER has confirmed that the Default Market Offer (DMO) will fall in both South East Queensland and NSW, while new consumer protection rules take effect nationally. But buried inside the good news are some important details for solar owners — particularly around feed-in tariffs and the new Solar Sharer Offer.

Queensland — Energex (South East Queensland)

  • Residential flat rate standing offer: decrease of 7.2% — approximately $155 less per year
  • Residential time-of-use standing offer: decrease of 10.7% — approximately $229 less per year
  • Small business flat rate: decrease of 10.4% — approximately $445 less per year

Queensland — Ergon (Regional Queensland)

  • Tariff 11 (standard residential): decrease of 6.9% — around $151 less per year
  • Small business Tariff 20: decrease of 8.1% — around $212 less per year

Important note for Ergon customers: While usage rates have decreased, service fees have increased. Customers with below-average consumption may see less benefit than the headline figures suggest.

The solar feed-in tariff cut — this one stings

Ergon has confirmed that the solar feed-in tariff will decrease from 8.660 cents per kWh to 6.006 cents per kWh from 1 July 2026 — a cut of approximately 2.65 cents per kWh, or about 31%. In SEQ and NSW, feed-in tariffs set by retailers have also been trending down.

The practical implication: exported solar is worth less from July 2026. This makes self-consumption — using your solar power in your home rather than exporting it — more important than ever.

The Solar Sharer Offer — a major new development

The biggest structural change is the launch of the Solar Sharer Offer — a new type of mandatory plan all retailers must offer in NSW, SEQ, and SA. Customers with smart meters can access three hours of free electricity in the middle of the day, with a 24 kWh daily cap. You need to shift at least approximately 6 kWh of daily consumption into the free three-hour window to come out ahead.

How solar and battery owners benefit

A battery can charge during the free three-hour midday window and discharge during evening peak, when grid rates are highest. For a household with a 10 kWh battery, an EV, and a heat pump hot water system, the free midday period can eliminate most grid draw for the entire day.

The bottom line: Falling grid tariffs, falling feed-in rates, and the new Solar Sharer Offer all point in the same direction — self-consumption is king. Solar + battery is now the most financially compelling setup for QLD and NSW households.
